Kimonos and Cuts

Today I went to the salon to get my haircut . . . with all three of my children. All three of whom sat very quietly and sweetly in the waiting area while I got my hairs did. I'm so proud of those munchkins and so grateful that I was able to get a trim without having to work my schedule around Chris being home to watch the kids!

This kimono is a hand-me-down that was given to me while I was pregnant with Capri. I don't think I ever ended up actually wearing it during the pregnancy, although I imagined I would have. I like the loose oversized look over this white tee. It was only 50 degrees this morning (I know right, this is JULY!) so I wanted a little something extra over my shoulders even though it's warming  up here quite nicely now.

The kids and I are going to go for a 30-minute hike walk around a river in the woods at a nearby park just before heading to take CJ to karate this afternoon. I'm leaving the kimono behind, throwing my hair in a pony, and switching out the espadrilles for sneaks. Love versatile outfits like this.

I've been working a few hours here and there from home again for the company my husband works for. Just some data entry work, nothing special. I'm trying to get into the "3- hours-a-day-of-studying" rhythm for when law school starts in January. So far so good, but we aren't homeschooling right now so perhaps I'm being a little too optimistic.

I'm so excited about going back to school! I found my old syllabi for first and second year two nights ago. Pouring over those pages and all the memories came rushing back. Maybe not memories of the actual curriculum and vocabulary, but memories of those days, what life was like then, and the people in my life at that time. All good memories.

Speaking of school, we have only a couple of weeks left before I have to make sure my lesson plans are in order and my notification to homeschool is sent to our local superintendent. I don't plan to start school as early as we did last year since I don't have to worry about taking a week off for a baby or anything, but I still want to start a week earlier than the schools, which means we'll be going back pretty early in August. Maybe right after the Fair. Good times!

My New Shoes

My sister-in-law-to-be gave me these cute sandals on Easter. She bought them at a thrift store to wear for her rehearsal dinner, and decided to test them out on Easter Sunday. They were too uncomfortable for her, so she passed them on to me. When it comes to shoes, the last thing I care about is comfort. She is now my new favorite sister-in-law-to-be. I love these shoes!

President's Day Weekend

This past Sunday was such a glorious day. Full on sun making all our snow look like crystals. After church I enjoyed my first jog outside since December 1st.

With all the ice lurking beneath the snow I had to take it slow, which gave me a chance to take this picture of our river - completely frozen over.

Maybe I was a little foolish to be running on ice.

Monday was very windy and chilly so we spent the day at the mall. I'm glad we got out when we did, because right after we got home another blizzard hit.

My favorite buy of the day were these sunglasses from Banana Republic, normally $98 on clearance for $17.99!

Geeky Chic

So my little sis started college this week. How time flies. She's rockin' the geek look with these oversized specs and looking pretty cool, I think.

I recently got back from an eye exam for my son. I was relieved he didn't need glasses, but got in the mood to get a pair of new specs myself and found the Bonlook website with tons of chic and trendy options. Right now, I just wear glasses for reading and even then, I don't really need them, so I mostly ogled all the Bonlook sunglasses, especially falling for the La Marquise Crystal Sand sunglasses. I think my baby sister would approve.

Outfit Post: Adding Layers

So this sweater dress from Forever 21 is one of the "new-to-me" items I got this week. I was so glad when the boots I won with my eBay giftcard for hosting the eBay giveaway arrived in time for me to wear the dress with the boots to church this morning!
After taking these first two pictures, I realized this dress was definitely too tight, and decided I needed to start adding some layers.
First I thought just the jacket would be enough, but after I took this picture, I noticed I needed something for my ever growing neckline as well.

This scarf added just the right amount of coverage, and helped the outfit come together very nicely, I think.

After my son and I got our coats on and were about to leave for church, he insisted he get in on one of my pictures - so here's a picture of the last layer I added before heading out.

Outfit Post: Vintage Remixed

Remember this dress?
I was trying to wait to wear it until I had found the perfect nude pumps for it. I was also hoping to save it for a particular wedding we had planned to attend. But I have been looking for the perfect shoes for months, and have learned that I can't afford the shoes I want...so these will have to do.
Also, I was too sick to attend the wedding, and I'm afraid I might already be grown out of this dress by the time we attend the next wedding we were invited to.
So I'm just wearing this dress for church. I paired it with my grandmother's vintage bag that she gave me to wear for my wedding. I haven't worn the bag since the wedding and am all giddy about wearing it today. It's so prim and ladylike! I'm also wearing the earrings I wore at my wedding, which you can see in the shots on this page.
And I have the perfect backdrop for taking pictures of this dress...my vintage victorian house!

Outfit Post: Budding Photographer

My son shot this photo of me lounging around in my office today. I cropped it a little and messed with the lighting afterwards, but otherwise, it's all him. I'm looking forward to the day when he can take all my outfit photos for me. ha ha!

Outfit Post: Belted Twice

I created this necklace myself by twisting together two necklaces. The one is a drippy black choker, and the other is just a silver chain choker. I like how the silver and black match the silver and black belts.

This dress used to be strapless and about mid-calf length. I bought it with a little white sweater about five years ago to wear as I left the reception of my wedding. Since then, I've figured out that only knee-length looks good on me. So last summer, I hemmed the dress and used the fabric from the hem to make the dress some straps so I could wear it without a sweater. I love how it turned out!

Dress - Express - $29
Pumps - BCBGirls (via Macy's) - $21
Large black belt - Kohl's - $4
Double strap skinny belt - Banana Republic - $4
Chain necklace - thrifted - $2
Black choker - Lia Sophia - won at a Lia Sophia party
Shades - Target - $4

Outfit Post: Swimsuit

This picture was taken about a week ago at the beach, but I just wanted to show you this cute suit I found. I was frustrated at first with finding a modest swimsuit, but I was persistent and finally found 4 actually! Modesty in swimsuits is important to me, because every other day I keep myself covered up. Just because I'm at the beach, in my opinion, is not an excuse to throw it all out the window. Just my thoughts :)

A bit of girlishness

My little sister isn't wearing this skirt anymore so she gave it to me. It's a girl's size 10/12, but since it's poofy, it fits my hips just fine. It has almost three layers of skirt, so it is a lot of fun to wear. I feel like I should be going to a swing dance in the 1950's. Anyhow, I decided I better wear it soon since summer is almost over!
