My Beauty Must Haves

I will apologize up front that I no longer have a theme for this blog. I guess for the most part it's just pictures of my family and my life now. So those of you who come here to read about what's going on in my life and not for what make-up I'm wearing, just skip this.

DISCLAIMER: No one is sponsoring this post. None of these products were sent to me for a review. These are just products I can't live without right now.

Anyhow, I love finding things that work and I always seem to be on the hunt for something better. Beauty products also happen to be my current obsession (trying to be less of a clothes horse and not buy so many shoes, too). So this is what's on my mind.

1. Marchesa Parfum - Prettiest bottle ever. Light floral scent. I got it for Christmas after I sniffed everything that Sephora had to offer about a year ago. I had settled on this scent and finally got it! It's divine. It's my favorite. It's the first scent I picked out on my own (my husband always picked my fragrances out before this. Before my husband, my Grandpa did).

2. Neutrogena Eye Cream - It's not necessarily this brand that I'm in love with, because this is the first eye cream I've ever used. It's that using eye cream has made such a difference in my skincare routine! My eyes aren't as puffy when I wake up, and they don't get as irritated or red because I don't use my moisturizer around my eyes anymore, I just gently tap this stuff. This also helps keep my eye makeup on and helps it glide on more smoothly.

3. Medela Nipple Cream - OK, weird, I know. But I use it for my lips. It really really works and it has no taste to it. We had -15 wind chill this morning and my lips aren't dry. Enough said.

4. Eau Roma Water - I bought this a year ago from LUSH. It's handmade rose and lavender water that I spritz on before I put my moisturizer on in the morning and at night. During the winter months my skin gets so dry, especially after I put make-up on. Sometimes I spritz this on during the day over my make-up to help with the itchiness. It smells so fresh, it takes some of the redness away before moisturizing, and it helps make my skin look dewy.

5. Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks in Powder Pink - I don't use this for my lips, I just dab a small dot on the apples of my cheeks. It gives the most natural looking flush and does not make my skin dry. It lasts all day, too. A friend sent it to me for my Birthday last year and I've been hooked since.

6. LASHFOOD Conditioning Mascara - I got this as a free sample from a Sephora order. I also like Benefit mascara, however, this stuff is amazing. It never ever flakes, my lashes look longer and are stronger. When you first use it, it looks so natural that I wasn't so sure about it. I want drama for my lashes. It feels like you're just swiping oil on them, though, not dry gunk. After a few weeks of use, it starts working amazing - I have gone a couple days without mascara because of how long my eyelashes have gotten and now the mascara is noticeably dramatic.

7. ELF Eyebrow Gel - I'm obsessed with eyebrows right now. Putting a gel on them makes a huge difference for me because my eyebrow hairs are so long. The gel keeps them in place. I try to keep my eyebrow hairs trimmed, but even when I trim them, they need the gel to keep them arched. This stuff is so cheap ($2) and it does the trick. I'm sure there is better stuff out there, but for silly gel for my eyebrows, I'll spend $2, thank you.

8. Make-up Eraser Cloth - This cloth is what inspired me to write this post. This thing is a miracle. Seriously. I've used tons of make-up removers, pads, wipes, you name it. This works without any chemicals or soaps. You simply wet it, wipe once, buff with the opposite side of the cloth, and voila! I only wash it once a week, too. Do yourself a favor and buy this. It is worth its weight in gold.

9. Feeling Younger Skin Tint - I picked this up at LUSH with a Christmas gift card just for the fun of it. It's like putting pearlized paint on your skin, but it's actually handmade and healthy for your skin. My skin glows with this stuff. I mix it with my foundation for a more dewy look. Easier than "strobing," but gives the same effect.

10. Tarte Amazonian Clay Bronzer - Since age 15 I've been wearing bronzer and mascara. My two make-up must haves. In the past, any bronzer I've used clogs my pores, smudges, or hasn't been just the right color. This bronzer does not clog my pores, blends flawlessly, and is the most natural looking color I've ever used.

11. Essie Nail Polish Good as Gold - I love Essie polish. For whatever reason, this color dries so fast and only needs one coat. I have lots of Essie polishes, but only this one dries and covers this quickly. I love being able to swipe a quick coat on right before I walk out the door. Within minutes of driving, the color is dry and no second coat is needed. Such a versatile, classy color, too!

12. LUSH Reindeer Rock Soap - With that same LUSH gift certificate I picked up some of this soap, thinking it would just smell nice. I use it on my face in the shower, too. Since using this soap I have not been itchy at all (and remember, -15 wind chill here this Winter). I have the Clarisonic brush and haven't had to use it due to the exfoliation from the Make-up Eraser and the gentleness of this soap. It is so expensive for how fast you go through it, but if you want to splurge on something, this is totally worth it.

13. Urban Decay Smoky Eye Palette - I splurged on this a few months ago. I felt guilty at the time, but now I don't know how I'll use anything else. When I use the dark colors in this palette, I don't see a dusting under my eyes, the colors are all my favorite eye colors (with plenty of neutrals if you want to do a naked eye). The brown in this palette is the perfect color to fill in my brows, too. I also love the brush that comes with the palette for swiping in the crease of the eyelid. I'm addicted to this product.

14. NARS Sexual Healing Lipstick - I made the mistake of succumbing to the NARS make-up counter at Sephora and trying on almost every single color. Of course I'd find out that my most favorite lipstick color is in one of the most expensive make-up brands available! I can't go on about how great the texture is necessarily, but this color I cannot rave about enough. It has the right amount of shimmer, the right amount of frosty, the right amount of nude pink, and I've worn it about every day since I got it for Christmas (thanks Mom!). And sorry about the name. ;-)

So after all that, I'm still looking for the perfect foundation. I thought I was a Bare Minerals fan, but it has looked kind of funny this Winter. I can just see the powder and before using the Reindeer Rock soap my face was itchy when I wore the powder foundation like it was when I was using Urban Decay and Make-Up Forever. I tried the LUSH Colour Supplement, but it doesn't glide on easily and dries a little weird. I want to try NARS tinted moisturizer next. Any suggestions? I want something that covers well, offers a wide range of colors so I can match my skin right, and that isn't drying.

I'm also not thrilled with the moisturizers I'm using. Thankfully my cleanser/toner/exfoliating regime makes up for it. But still. I'm using Aveeno Daily Moisturizer for day and Neutrogena for night. Neither products are bad, but I don't really notice much of a difference when I use them. Maybe it's just that my reindeer soap, eau roma water, and that makeup eraser is all I need! I was given a sample of Perricone MD once - it was amazing, but I just can't afford it. Suggestions?

OK, I'm done now. I'm glad I got to get all that girl talk out.

White Jeans and Eyebrow Make-up

Posting in real time today. It's been a while since I've done that.

Coming from 95 degree heat with humidity in Florida means that today's 78 degrees in Ohio calls for long pants. And what better way to celebrate summer than by pulling out the white jeans!

Top - JCPenney via Goodwill - $1.50
Jeans - Gap - $0.58 (due to GapRewards)
Wedges - Nine West via DSW - $20
Earrings and watch - gifted

I took the kids to a free movie today at the theatre. We saw The Croods. I love taking advantage of free kids movie days at the theatre. Such a special treat that reminds me that we're off of school and on summer vacation!

I thought my high/low shirt would be perfect for covering up in case my white jeans were see through (does anyone else have that problem with white jeans?).

Had to put my hair in an updo because I slathered it with coconut oil yesterday in hopes it would help my split ends. Not sure of the results yet, but at least I like the smell of coconut. I might need to do some research to find some other home remedies for split end hair repairs.

For the past few months or more I've really been into defining my eyebrows. I've always been good about keeping them tweezed and trimmed, but lately I've been using an eyebrow pencil, highlighter, brush, and gel. I only use the pencil and highlighter here and there, but I've been pretty religious about wearing the gel these days. I just feel like my face looks so much more polished with every brow hair in place.

I've also been trying to lay off the eye make-up, keeping my brows as the only drama point. I use light, neutral eyeshadows, and I've only been wearing mascara on my upper lashes.

I still wear winged eyeliner every now and again, and regular eyeliner on my bottom waterline, too. Today I'm just wearing a very slight smudging of brown on my bottom waterline.

I feel like this is an easy, fresh, and youthful look that is on trend to boot.

What are your make-up dos these days? Are you experimenting with anything new this summer?

An Outfit and My New Favorite Lipstick

My husband shot these photos while I was at my parent's house. Love the little wooded forest that they live by. The weather was spectacular for our little Easter weekend visit, so we spent as much time out on the trails as we could.

Trench coat - Zara - $69
Top - J.Crew via Goodwill - $3
Necklace - vintage - gifted
Jeans - H&M - $2.50
Booties - Guess via DSW - $19

We have a family wedding this summer, so Mom and I went shopping for some wedding make-up for Mom. While browsing around at Sephora during Mom's makeover with the saleslady, I tried on the Color Reveal Unique Pink Lip Balm. The color is supposed to adjust to each person's individual skin tone so it should look good on everyone. I really struggle with finding the right lipstick color, so I knew I had to try it. I couldn't believe that I finally found something that works. This is the exact shade of pink that I was looking for! My Mom got it too and found that it was perfect for her as well. The only drawback is that it feels like an 8-hour lipstick in that it dries your lips out really fast. I just remedied that by applying a clear gloss over it after a few hours. There is a Unique Pink lip gloss that goes with it that I think I'll probably end up buying.

Product Review: Maybelline Falsies Mascara

I usually wear CoverGirl mascara, but recently decided I'd try out Maybelline's Falsies mascara, just to try something different. I figured I'd let you all know what I thought about it...

At first I was horrified! It is a lot messier than Cover Girl's, so it took me forever to apply it properly and then clean up all the smudges later. It also tends to clump, so I had to brush it out a few times to keep my eyelashes from looking like little spider legs! Washing it off is just as messy as putting it on and then some. It took quite a while to get all the mascara out, and a Q-tip with moisturizer was still needed afterwards to get the last few smudges.

Now that I've used it for a week, I'm noticing some benefits. I truly have not seen my eyelashes look this full and long in quite a while. And the best benefit is that my eyes have been watering with all the other mascaras I've used in the past (L'Oreal, Cover Girl, Mary Kay, a natural kind by Sephora, Clinique, Dior, etc.)...and so far, my eyes have not burned or watered once with this mascara.

For around $5-6, this is a great mascara for dramatic evening looks. I think I'd still like to find something else that is not as messy to apply for an everyday mascara.

Any recommendations?

Product Review: Revlon Eye Make-Up

I was sent Revlon's new eye-make-up compacts to try out and give a review on. I loved the colors they sent and couldn't wait to try them out!

On the back of the compact is a very simple guide to show you exactly where to place each color - which is great, since I wouldn't know where to place five different colors on my eyes!
Instead of using the compact brush they provide, I used my trusty brushes. One for the lid, one for the crease, one for liner, and one for the brow bone. I highly recommend using your own brushes when using multiple colors on your eyes, so the color doesn't mix on the one compact brush provided.

I tried the pink/mauve tones today and thought the color was very nice and subtle. I found that the powder was a little too light, because it kept leaving a dusting in places it shouldn't. I had to do a lot of clean-up with a q-tip afterwards. I also noticed that in order to get the dark color to show up as a liner (as they suggest on the back of the compact), you need to dab your brush in a touch of water. That also helped with the dusting of powders that kept spilling on my cheekbone as I brushed the powder on my lids.

Another problem I encountered was that because all the colors were in one package without any dividers between each shadow, you have to be very careful to keep the colors separate when you apply the powder on your brush. I really wish make-up companies would be better about putting dividers between colors so they don't blend together.

Overall I thought the product was great for the money. The tips on how to apply on the back of the compact were great, the end result was lovely, and the amount of each color was nice, too. I didn't like the dusting of powder it left, or the fact that the colors could easily blend into one without having a divider, but that is a problem I encounter with all powder eyeshadows.

If you're interested in creating a subtly dramatic look for your eyes, you should definitely try Revlon's 5 color eye shadow compacts.

What is your favorite brand of eye shadow? And what tricks do you use to apply it properly?

Organizing your make-up brushes...

One of my good friends introduced me to this fabulous idea of using a flower frog as a make-up brush holder. I loved how it looked on her dresser so much, that I've been hoping to buy one for myself ever since. I've never found it cheap enough for me to justify the purchase (I know, I'm a cheapskate!), but my dear sister-in-law knew I wanted one, and bought me one for my Birthday! Yay!
Now isn't this a genius way to organize your make-up brushes? Now I just need to clean them one of these days...

Inspired

Inspired by In Styles "Viva La Vamp" article I decided to mix a few of my darker lip colors today before going on a date with my husband
I know my eyes look freaky with their red pupils...but perhaps that adds to the vamp? LOL
Following what the article suggested I'm not wearing any blush...but I did put some highlighter on my cheekbones, forehead and chin. You can't really see it in the picture though. oh well.
This picture cracks me up, I love how my daughter is trying to copy my pose. haha!

Revlon Fantasy Lengths

Remember when I posted about trying out Revlon's false eyelashes? Well I've finally had a chance to try them.

For this being my first application, I think they look ok. I was impressed with how easy they actually were to apply and then how natural they look once on before applying mascara. I need to practice more later on to get them to look even better, but for now I'm loving the fun, flirty look.

I'm wearing the Fantasy Length version that you glue on. My eyes must be big, because I didn't have to cut them at all and had plenty of space on each side that could have used some more lash. I've worn them all day so far without any problems.

Missi told me you are supposed to apply mascara to falsies, so I added two coats of black mascara for even more pizazz. Then I lined both the top and bottom rims with a thick coat of black eyeliner. To soften the look, I brushed on the turquoise shadow on the top and bottom, over the liner. I added white highlighter to the brow bone and inner corners of my eyes, as well as a darker shade of blue green to the eyelid crease.

What do you all think?

Visit to see Missi

I got to go visit my sister Missi this past weekend! She and her daughter were in the midwest visiting her in-laws, so I wasn't too far a drive out. During my visit we ended up spending a little time at the mall and decided to try on the Russian Red MAC lipstick that we've read about in fashion mags for a while. Since the lipstick was only $14, we decided to splurge and buy some. It will be a fun fashion statement for the holidays we think!

Leggings

One of our readers asked us to show her some gold eyeshadow looks, so here is my idea of a daytime look using gold eyeshadow. The "tutorial" is posted on Facebook (since that was where our reader posted her question). I used Mary Kay eyeliner, L'Oreal Voluminous black mascara, and Jasmine La Belle eyeshadows from Ulta.
I just got my Glamour magazine yesterday and loved the article on how to wear leggings. I had bought these racer stripe leggings to wear for when I'm on the treadmill, but after reading the Glamour article, I realized I could wear them for a regular day outfit as well!

Pink or nude lips and cat eyes = Bridgette Bardot

The iconic look of Bridgette Bardot has been back in trend for a few years now. It is sultry, sexy, and yet fairly simple. Winged eyeliner, nude or pink lips, and big hair.

The modern day Bridgette Bardot look was achieved first by Angelina Jolie. If this photo of Jolie doesn't make you want to try the look, I don't know what will.
Last night I watched Kandee the Make-up Artist's post on winged eyeliner, and was inspired. I picked up some cheap Maybelline lipcolor in Pink Please at Wal-Mart, and decided to try it all out today. I think I should have gone all out and started with a matte foundation for the true Bridgette Bardot look, but you get the idea. Now I'm about to go for a jog, so my hair is nice and frizzy, and I'm already starting to sweat...but at least I have flirty lips and sultry eyes.

On another note, there's a website I found online that sells clothes wholesale clothing and other wholesale items like shoes and even intimates. It's called Red Tag Clothing and the prices are really great. Not only are the prices lower but you literally get more for your money.

Happy Fourth of July!

The Fourth of July is my favorite day of the summer and by far my most favorite holiday. I love the weather, the food, the fireworks, the people. I never feel more "American" then I do on the fourth of July. In honor of the day and the freedoms we still have, I proudly wear my red lipstick ..because I can!
I know this outfit really isn't an "outfit" just a tank top and shorts. But I have red lipstick on and I'm feeling fabulous.
The cherries and have been pitted (for cherry pie!) the corn has been husked, now I just need to go get the marinade on the meat and we'll be all set to go. Happy Fourth of July everyone!
